Varicose Veins: Tips for Slowing Development and Minimizing Discomfort

Varicose veins are not just a cosmetic issue. Those who are dealing with this medical condition often experience discomfort that can range from mild to severe and that negatively impact their daily lives. The enlarged, ropy appearance of varicose veins can occur in any vein of the body, but they are most often associated with the lower extremities.

Although some people are predisposed to develop varicose veins, the level of severity may be influenced by other factors. If you have varicose veins or fear you may prone to developing this condition, the following tips may be able to help you slow the progression and minimize the discomfort caused by this medical condition.

Increasing circulation with exercise

Because varicose veins are a visible result of a problem with the body's circulatory system, an important step in preventing their formation or worsening is to help your body circulate blood more efficiently. Getting regular low-impact exercise, such as walking, cycling, or swimming, can be a healthy way to improve circulation and limit the amount of blood that pools in the veins and contributes to the further development of varicose veins.

Another important factor in increasing healthy circulation is to change position and move about frequently throughout the workday. Office workers and others who sit while working can help increase circulation by taking a quick break to stretch and walk around as often as possible or by using a standing or treadmill desk. Those who must drive long distances for work or personal reasons should attempt to stop periodically to walk around and stretch.

Reducing pressure with weight loss

Varicose veins strike people of all weights, but those who are overweight may experience a more severe form of the condition. Normalizing body weight can help relieve pressure on the veins, alleviate discomfort, and lessen swelling and inflammation.

Increasing comfort with wardrobe choices

Even clothing and shoe choices can affect the discomfort and severity of varicose vein symptoms. Wearing high heels and constrictive hosiery can increase leg fatigue, especially if worn daily. Additionally, wearing uncomfortably snug jeans, boots, and belts should also be avoided.

Varicose vein sufferers can feel more comfortable by choosing comfortable shoes with a lower heel and compression stockings that are specifically designed to help lessen discomfort. Compression stockings work by using gradually elevated levels of compression from the foot upward to help restore healthier blood circulation and prevent pooling.

In addition to medical care, varicose vein treatment services can be helpful in designing a customized treatment plan to help prevent varicose veins from worsening, as well as helping patients learn about available removal methods.

Accidents Happen: A Guide to Children's Emergencies

One of the things I learned when I had children was that accidents can happen at any time. Unfortunately, my children's pediatrician was not always available when those accidents did happen. I had to learn what was considered an emergency and what could wait until the doctor's office was open. Knowing the difference and what to do in non-emergency situations can be confusing. That is why I created this blog. I wanted to provide other parents with a guide that helps them to understand when it is time to head for urgent care or the hospital and when injuries could be treated at home.
